First ride checklist for a new dirt bike or quad
The first ride should be short, slow and predictable. Use this checklist alongside the manufacturer's manual for your specific machine. If anything feels loose or unclear, stop and ask a qualified mechanic or your seller to inspect it.
Before starting
Read the manual and identify the stop switch, brakes, throttle and starting process. Inspect the machine for transit damage or loose parts. Check tyre pressure against the model's guidance, look at the brakes and make sure the steering moves freely. For an electric bike, check the battery and charger instructions. For a petrol machine, follow its fuel and fluid checks.
Prepare the rider
Wear a properly fitting helmet, eye protection, gloves, sturdy boots and protective clothing suited to the activity. Make sure the rider can reach and operate the controls and that someone responsible is supervising new or young riders.
Choose the place
Use a permitted open space away from traffic, bystanders and obstacles. Get the landowner's permission where required. Check the surface and avoid steep ground for a first session. Off-road vehicles are not automatically approved for public-road use.
Keep the first session simple
Practise starting, straight-line riding, braking and controlled turns before adding speed. Pause regularly to check how the machine feels. After the ride, look again for loose parts, leaks, unusual sounds or braking changes and follow the manual's running-in advice where it applies.
Save this checklist with the product manual so it is ready for the next ride.
